NaCTeM joins signatories of open letter to EC Commissioners on licences for Europe
2013-02-27
John McNaught, deputy director of NaCTeM, is one of the signatories on an open letter written to the EC Commissioners who have launched the "Licences for Europe" stakeholder dialogue.
The letter stresses the deep concerns of the signatories regarding the decisions already made by the EC in terms of the licensing that is required to carry out text and data mining, namely that additional licensing is the only solution to the problems being faced by those wishing to undertake text and data mining of content to which they already have lawful access. The letter highlights the importance and potential impact of text and data mining, and explains that the decisions of the EC place European researchers and technology companies at a serious disadvantage compared to those located in the United States and Asia.
