NaCTeM mentioned in The Guardian

2015-06-11

John McNaught, deputy director of NaCTeM, is quoted in The Guardian newspaper, in an article entitled Call to unlock a treasure chest of hidden research data. The article describes the difficulties faced by text mining researchers, since copyright law limits the amount of data that can be mined by researchers.

Mr. McNaught has been actively involved in several events and initiatives that are campaigning for changes to the copyright law. Currently, the UK is the only EU member-state to allow a text and data-mining exception for non-commercial use. However, the European Commission is moving towards updating its 2001 copyright laws to better suit the digital age.
