Launch of JISC report on the value and benefits of text mining

John McNaught, deputy director, attended the launch of the JISC report on the value and benefits of text mining, to which NaCTeM was pleased to contribute. He comments: "This report not only confirms the value and benefits of text mining to UK higher education, but it also highlights barriers to exploitation of the potential of text mining. One main barrier identified concerns current copyright law. This report is thus a timely addition of evidence to underpin arguments for the adoption of a copyright law exception for text mining for non-commercial research, as proposed by the Hargreaves Review of Intellectual Property and Growth. Moreover, the report serves to emphasise the far-seeing nature of JISC's decision to set up the National Centre for Text Mining, which stands ready to help researchers in UK HE to exploit text mining in the search for new knowledge that will drive innovation and growth."
